Aston Villa have joined the Championship fight to secure the signature of Liverpool winger Sheyi Ojo, according to a report.
The Mirror claim on their website’s live transfer blog on Monday (14:07) that the Midlands club are up against fellow second tier sides Middlesbrough, Fulham and Derby to sign the 20-year-old on loan this summer.
The versatile attacker, who can operate on either flank, is set to be shipped out on a temporary deal as Jurgen Klopp looks to earn him some first team football for his development.
It would not be the first time he has left Liverpool on loan, having spent time at Wigan and Wolves, the latter of which ended in January 2016.
Since then, he has spent time working for a place in the senior side of the Premier League big guns, and has managed to appear 13 times for the first team, with two outings coming last season in the FA Cup.
Football Insider verdict
Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce has already seen Premier League experience through the door at Villa Park this summer, with John Terry, Glenn Whelan, Ahmed Elmohamady and Christopher Samba all signing for the club. However, while their years of playing time in the top flight will undoubtedly be beneficial, they need some passion and excitement in their side. Ojo offers that in spades. A pacey, attack minded winger, he is the sort of winger who will get fans out of their seats and bring a new dimension to the first team. He might be raw and without much recent game time, but a loan deal allows Bruce to take a risk on a player who has experience of playing in a first class team. For Liverpool, Villa seems the perfect place to send the youngster. Playing regular football in England’s second tier surrounded by Premier League professionals would only benefit his development, and at the end of the day, that is the aim for the Reds.
In other Aston Villa transfer news, a Championship rival is set to make an imminent move for one of the Villans’ forwards.
