Aston Villa land £69m windfall as Man City blown out of the water
Aston Villa have banked more than £69million after securing their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, sources have told Football Insider.
The West Midlands giants qualified automatically for the last 16 after finishing eighth in the revamped league phase of the competition, having registered five victories and one draw in their eight fixtures.
They beat Club Brugge 6-1 on aggregate in their last-16 showdown to make it through to the quarter-finals.
Unai Emery’s side will take on PSG next month for a place in the semi-finals after the French champions knocked out Premier League leaders Liverpool in the previous round.
That result meant Villa and Arsenal are the only remaining English clubs in the Champions League after Manchester City were knocked out by Real Madrid in the play-off round.
Man City banked £64million from the Champions League this season, but Villa have already surpassed that total following their impressive run to the quarter-finals.
Aston Villa could bank extra £12m+
As per official Uefa documents released last March, each team will earn a guaranteed £15.6million for playing in the Champions League this season.
They will then be in line for extra cash payments under the governing body’s new value pillar system, which is split into European and non-European segments based on their coefficient ranking and the market pool.
Clubs are awarded £1.8million for each win and £587,000 for a draw in the league phase, meaning Villa banked around £9.6million from their eight fixtures.
The Premier League side also received £9.2million for qualifying automatically for the last 16 as well as £1.7million for finishing in the top eight.
The 36 clubs competing in the Champions League this season will also be paid an additional amount based on their individual ranking following the conclusion of the league phase.
Bottom of the table Young Boys earned £230,000, while Villa’s eighth-place finish landed them £6.7million.
The Midlands club banked a further £10.5million after securing their place in the quarter-finals, with a semi-final spot worth £12.6million.
Sources have told Football Insider Villa’s total prize money currently stands at around £69.3million, including the payments from the value pillar system.

Aston Villa certain to agree Marco Asensio deal
Recruitment expert Mick Brown told Football Insider Villa are certain to sign Marco Asensio permanently following his impressive performances since arriving on loan from PSG in the January transfer window.
The 29-year-old has registered seven goals in his eight appearances for Emery’s side, including three strikes in their last-16 victory over Club Brugge.
PSG are willing to let Asensio leave for £15million after he’s failed to nail down a regular first-team spot since making the move to the French capital in 2023.
The Spain international will be permitted to line up against his parent side for Villa next month, with Uefa rules forbidding clubs from exercising influence over the players another team may field in a match.
