Aston Villa and Sunderland are weighing up moves for prolific Scottish striker Connor Shields, Football Insider sources understand.

Shields has caught the eye for Scottish League One side Albion Rovers so far this season with 11 goals in 17 games and he has been named in several SPFL teams of the week for his impressive displays.

The 20-year-old’s rich vein of form has brought him to the attention of several clubs south of the border with scouts from Premier League and Championship clubs monitoring his progress at Albion Rovers.

Watford have been credited with an interest in Shields, while a source close to the situation told Football Insider sources that scouts from Championship duo Aston Villa and Sunderland cast an eye over the forward during Saturday’s defeat to Alloa.

Albion Rovers are unlikely to stand in Shields’ way if any of his English suitors firm up their interest in the striker when the transfer window reopens in January.

The source explained that Villa are ready to line up a bid for someone with what they believe is the potential to develop into a first-team regular in the future.

In other Aston Villa transfer news, the club have tabled multiple striker offers.
