Aston Villa to offload mis-firing duo and make £16m double signing - report

By Will Butcher

Aston Villa will try to sell Ross McCormack and Jordan Ayew to make room for two new recruits, according to a report.

Sunday’s paper edition of the Sun (page 59) claims that the attacking duo will be offloaded by manager Steve Bruce to fund moves for James Bree and Jordan Rhodes.

The report claims Villa have been quoted a fee of £12million to sign Middlesbrough striker Rhodes, while £4million will see Barnsley right-back Bree put pen to paper at Villa.

Currently away with Ghana at the African Cup of Nations, the report claims versatile forward Ayew will be offloaded after a nightmare stay in the Midlands.

The 25-year-old has scored just three goals in 22 league and cup encounters this season, after being relegated last season with just 17 Premier League points.

Former Leeds and Rangers ace McCormack is also set to be thrown out of the squad, after failing to replicate the form that earned him a £12million move to Villa Park in the summer. He’a also scored just three goals in 21 appearances for the Midlands club.

Football Insider verdict:

Ayew and McCormack have been two of Villa’s worst culprits as they struggle for goals this season. On Saturday night, Scotland international McCormack proved just how much of a flop he has been since his move to the claret and blue side. Missing a header from close range when it looked easier to score, Villa lost 1-0 to rivals Wolves. Like McCormack, Ayew has also struggled as he is forced to play out wide with Bruce’s squad lacking in recognised wingers. Trying to recuperate a substantial amount for both players will be crucial for Bruce, as he looks to bolster his side with Bree and Rhodes. The available duo are likely to want to a move to Villa, and would significantly improve Bruce’s chances of earning a fifth career promotion to the Premier League.
