Kieran Maguire shreds Aston Villa owners after ignorant announcement - 'It looks bad'

Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris have shown their “tin ear” by raising ticket prices at Aston Villa during a cost of living crisis.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire. speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the pricing structure at Villa Park.

Villa announced on Wednesday (4 May) that season ticket prices for 2022-23 would rise by 10 per cent on the current season.

The club claimed the move is to bring rates in line with their Premier League peers after a decade of relatively flat prices.

But Maguire claims that the increase is emblematic of owners who are ignorant of the financial circumstances of bedrock fans.

“For a club owned by the richest man in Egypt and by two billionaires, it does seem a bit tin-eared,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“Villa normally generate around £10m to £12m per year in matchday income. So 10 per cent of that is £1m.

“You get an extra £2m for finishing 14th instead of 15th, to put that in context.

“It’s a time when football fans are tightening their belts and wondering how they are going to pay the essential bills.

“Football falls into the next tier of expenditure in terms of importance.

“I think Villa fans will be disappointed. It looks bad and it’s not as though the side has delivered in a way that would justify this.”

Villa are currently 13th in the league table.

They face Burnley on Saturday (7 May) and have five games remaining in total.
