Football Insider rates the Aston Villa players out of ten following their 2-1 loss to Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening.

Sam Johnstone  2 – The January signing was busy all night trying to stop an attacking Forest team from finding the back of the net. But his calamitous error just before the break cost his side the game.

James Chester 6 – It was a much better display from Chester compared to the Brentford game, but he did at times make unnecessary fouls. Will be disappointed to concede the second goal.

Tommy Elphick 7 – A typical Elphick like performance in defence, full of grit and determination. He was a handful from set pieces when Villa were attacking and should have scored.

Nathan Baker 6 – He did well when coming out to deal with danger outside of the box, but Baker didn’t do it enough when the ball was in the penalty area.

James Bree 6 – Another player who should be happy with his debut performance for his new side. The right-back could have done more in the game, but a positive start.

Conor Hourihane 5 – Mixed performance from the playmaker, who at times delivered some really good balls into the box, but also lost possession and needed to be more strong in midfield.

Henri Lansbury 5 – The former Forest man is exactly what Villa have been looking for, somebody to spray the ball around, but, like Hourihane,  he could have been more stronger in his midfield battles.

Birkir Bjarnason 6 – He worked hard on the left-hand side, both in defence and attack, but didn’t standout or produce anything brilliant.

Jack Grealish 5 – When the academy product gets on the ball, he does make Villa tick, but Grealish was too quiet throughout the game. That was followed by a stupid second yellow.

Jonathan Kodjia 7 – Scored a magnificent curling effort and was a part of many of Villa’s attacking player. However, he does need to pass the ball a lot more.

Scott Hogan 7 – Very positive debut from the striker, without scoring. Hogan was making some encouraging runs off the ball and linking up with Kodjia very well.

Leandro Bacuna 5 (for Kodjia, 81mins)

Albert Adomah 5 (for Hogan, 83mins)

Andre Green 5 (for Lansbury, 86mins)
