COMMENT

Aston Villa came back from behind to snatch a 1-1 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road on Friday night.

The Villans went down to a Pontus Jansson header from a corner in a first half which the home side dominated, and went into the break with the score at 1-0 to the Whites' favour.

The second half was a different story, and Steve Bruce's side managed to snatch a point to take back to the Midlands thanks to substitute Henri Lansbury, netting an impressive strike from outside the box.

It was a game of two halves, and one in which a point was probably a fair result considering the performances of the sides in each of the 45 minutes.

So how did each of the Aston Villa stars get on?

Here, Football Insider rates the players out of 10 for their performances at Elland Road, including a fringe figure who starred with an 8/10 display.

Goalkeeper and defenders

Sam Johnstone - 6: The Manchester United loanee had little to do in the first half, aside from picking the ball out of the back of his net. He could have perhaps commanded his box better for the goal, but the quality of delivery from Hernandez meant Villa were always under threat. His second half display was confident, and his deliveries forward were important

Alan Hutton - 5: A defender of his experience should not have been getting as wound up as he did, and perhaps should have seen yellow for a multitude of fouls. Put his side under threat time and again, and was finally booked in added time.

Chris Samba - 6: Despite his hulking presence, he did not really fulfil his duties to the standard expected of someone with his experience. He was no threat from set plays, while he simply offered a body at the back, with his passing leaving much to be desired.

James Chester - 6: A powerful challenge which crumpled Leeds winger Alioski was his highlight of the first half, evidently looking to set the tone for the clash. Unfortunately for him, the Whites dominated possession and he was tested time and again.

Neil Taylor - 6: The Welsh international would have liked to have had more of an effect down the left wing, with his crossing way below what would have been expected. At the back, he was tested by the brilliance of Samu Saiz, a battle he lost on more than one occasion.

Midfielders

Josh Onomah - 5: The Tottenham loanee was not at his best in the centre of the park, struggling to find the space and time he would have like to try and dictate the game. He was given 65 minutes before being hooked off by Steve Bruce, who would have expected much more.

Glenn Whelan - 6: It was a quiet day out for the former Stoke man in the first half, as play seemed to pass him by. Much more influential in the second half and played his role in both defending and pushing up the field.

Conor Hourihane - 5: A really disappointing display, as he failed to create very little from midfield. He was frustrated by the physicality of the Leeds midfield and was kept quiet before being swapped out just after the hour mark.

Forwards

Albert Adomah - 6: Considering he has been in such a rich vein of form this was a surprisingly uneventful outing for Adomah. He was on the periphery for much of the first half and the second half also brought him little joy.

Robert Snodgrass - 5: A quiet first half saw him have a minimal impact on proceedings, other than a couple of deliveries which failed to find a team mate. Despite his experience, he was naive up front at times, caught offside from a simple free kick at the 50 minute mark.

Keinan Davis - 6: Trying to lead the line without much service was always going to be a tough ask, and he really had less than scraps to feed off. Perhaps should have been dropping deeper to have an impact in the first half, he caused a little menace in the second 45 minutes, but Leeds stood relatively resolute.

Substitutes

Jack Grealish - 8: The game changer. Obviously with a point to prove, he was the catalyst needed for Steve Bruce's side to take it to the next level and grab an equaliser. Impressive in both his passing and movement on and off the ball, he changed the tempo and drove Villa forward to great effect. Will no doubt be hoping for more first team action in the near future.

Henri Lansbury - 7: Had done very little until hitting Villa's equaliser, which was a inch-perfect hit from the former Nottingham Forest man. Like Grealish, his arrival had a real impact on the way which Villa pushed forward and it was a great move from the manager.

Ahmed Elmohamady - N/A: Was only given the minutes in added time.
