Aston Villa players lambasted by ex-teammate after confirmed news - pundit

Aston Villa players should “look at themselves in the mirror” in order to turn their league form around under new boss Steven Gerrard, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Claret and Blue defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted Dean Smith wasn’t solely to blame for the slump in recent months.

Aston Villa are just two points clear of the Premier League drop zone after losing five consecutive games.

Steven Gerrard was appointed as manager at Villa Park today (November 11th), succeeding Dean Smith – who was sacked on Monday following a 1-0 away loss at Southampton.

An Aston Villa source has told Football Insider that Gerrard will be joined by coaching assistants Gary McAllister and Michael Beale as well as head of performance Jordan Milsom and technical coach Tom Culshaw.

Hutton suggested the players need to take accountability for Villa’s poor form.

“Everybody needs to be held accountable for the performances and the results,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“They’ve lost the last five games, and the only good spell within that was 80 minutes against Wolves.

“Not just the coaching staff, but every single player has to look at themselves in the mirror and ask: ‘Did I do enough? Did I play to my potential?’

“The answer for most of them is no. Everyone will need to push in one direction under the new manager to turn the form around, and that didn’t happen under Smith towards the end.

“That’s what ultimately got him the sack.”

Aston Villa have conceded 20 goals this term, the third-highest total in the Premier League.
