Aston Villa risking fan backlash after making ticket announcement

Aston Villa fans are once again being asked to dig deep as the club looks to increase its revenue.

As per Aston Villa reporter John Townley, season and match tickets have increased by 5% for the second season running, whilst it could cost up to £99 to watch a Champions League match.

It comes after the club announced that the North Stand will be closed for redevelopment throughout next season, meaning the capacity of the stadium will be reduced, and many fans will have to relocate.

Aston Villa’s return to the Champions League, and success by winning the Europa League and finishing fourth in the Premier League table, means the club have netted over £200million in prize money overall this season.

It gives Aston Villa headroom against financial rules heading into the summer transfer window, and their ticket hikes will likely do little to change that.

Liverpool fans provide inspiration for ticketing U-turn

Former Manchester City financial advisor Stefan Borson told Football Insider that Aston Villa would hide behind financial rules when increasing their ticket prices.

Aston Villa are not the only Premier League club to have put up their prices ahead of next season, with only a handful of sides freezing prices.

Liverpool fans successfully protested against prices rises at home games this season, and forced the ownership into a U-turn on their plans.

Whilst Aston Villa are successful on the pitch, and under the management of Unai Emery, it feels unlikely that there will be loud protests against the owners.

The fans though may want to see their money being used wisely to improve the squad in the transfer market, or on upgrading facilities in the ground.

What are Aston Villa’s summer transfer plans?

Aston Villa could still agree to sell players this summer to improve their financial position further, as Emery will want to strengthen his squad.

The Villans are desperate to keep Morgan Rogers, so the likes of Emi Martinez, Ollie Watkins and John McGinn could all depart.

The trio, all aged 30 or older, points to a refresh of the squad for Emery, and a desire to bring in younger players.

Aston Villa could net a sizeable profit if all three players depart, with Emery looking to sign a new full-back, midfielder and a striker this summer.
