Aston Villa set to axe 24-year-old as suitors eye move - report

By Derek Smithson

Charlton Athletic are eyeing a move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer, according to a report.

London News claim that the Midlands club are prepared to send the 24-year-old out on loan for the upcoming season to give him regular first-team action.

It is understood that League One side Charlton are keen on a loan move for the shot stopper as they are short of options in goal.

Steer spent the majority of the last campaign on the sidelines with an achilles injury and is now set for a spell away from Villa Park to obtain senior football.

The goalkeeper played just three times for the club’s Under-23s side and is not set to be in their plans next season.

He only has four senior appearances for Villa under his belt following his arrival in 2013 and has enjoyed loan spells at Doncaster, Yeovil and Huddersfield.

Football Insider verdict:

Steer has shown in the past that he has great qualities and enjoyed a superb loan spell at Huddersfield in the 2015/16 season in the Championship. The 24-year-old is still very young for a goalkeeper and another loan move could be the perfect catalyst to help reignite his career. His injury blow last season halted his momentum and there is no point in him playing for the reserves next season, with Steve Bruce already signing Sam Johnstone to be his number one option. Steer should prove to be a massive signing for Charlton on loan and will be able to remind people of his ability.
