Aston Villa news: Medical expert names new Lucas Digne return date after 'significant' update
Lucas Digne could now return before the end of the season after a positive update from Aston Villa.
That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.
Digne, 28, was forced off with a broken clavicle in Villa’s 4-0 defeat to Tottenham earlier this month (9 April).
Initial noises from Steven Gerrard suggested that the French left-back’s season was almost certainly over.
But the manager told club media last Friday (22 April) that there is now an “outside chance” that he may return before the end of the campaign.
And Dinnery claims that the fact that it is a bone rather than a muscle injury gives him a fighting chance of playing again in 2021-22

“He has had a surgical intervention to repair this,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.
“So it is better than expected because the initial fears were that he definitely wouldn’t return this season.
“The fact he now has an outside chance of returning for game week 37 or 38 is significant.
“You might ask, is there any point in taking the risk? There are two schools of thought here.
“Villa still aren’t safe in terms of their top-flight survival and there is still a need to put the points on the board, which factors in.
“But also, we’re not talking about a muscle injury. It’s the union of the bone so it isn’t bound by the same associated risk factors.
“He is working fairly hard in the gym and maintaining base levels of fitness.
“The only thing he isn’t doing is training with the group and having full-contact sessions.
“If he is fit and ready, I don’t see there being any massive risk with bringing him back.”
Digne has supplied one assist in 10 appearances since he joined Villa from Everton in January.
Villa, who are currently 15th after a five-match winless run, are next in action against Norwich City on Sunday (30 March).
