Aston Villa tipped to complete Gomez signing after centre-back deal agreed - pundit

Aston Villa will enter the market to sign another centre-half following Axel Tuanzebe’s move to Napoli, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Arsenal and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested a move for Liverpool’s Joe Gomez is on the cards.

On Saturday (8 January), Manchester United confirmed Tuanzebe had joined Napoli on loan for the remainder of the 2021-22 campaign.

The centre-half has cut short his season-long loan spell at Aston Villa in order to complete the move.

Steven Gerrard now only has three senior centre-halves at his disposal in Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa and Kortney Hause.

Campbell believes Gerrard will try and raid his ex-club Liverpool to sign Joe Gomez.

“I think Villa are a bit light in that position now,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“You could see that when Tyrone Mings was out injured. Mings is essential for what they do.

“Steven Gerrard knows what is needed to take this squad to the next level. He has been there long enough now. He will be thinking, ‘I need another centre-half.’

“Joe Gomez isn’t really getting a game at Liverpool. He has fallen down the pecking order since Ibrahima Konate has come in. To leave for a club like Villa and get game time could be a good move.”

Gomez has made just 10 appearances this season, with the majority of those as a substitute.

His contract at Anfield runs until the summer of 2024.
