Aston Villa tipped to offload Douglas Luiz and sign 'upgrade' after source's transfer reveal - Hutton

Alan Hutton has suggested Aston Villa could cash in on Douglas Luiz and sign an “upgrade” this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Villa defender insisted the likes of Kalvin Phillips and Yves Bissouma would both represent a step up from the 23-year-old Brazilian.

As revealed by Football Insider on Thursday (8 April), Villa have registered their interest in Brighton star Bissouma ahead of the summer after failing with a January bid.

Meanwhile, the Telegraph (3 April) claim Villa are also preparing a £60million move for Leeds star Kalvin Phillips.

The Villans’ interest comes with Luiz heading into the final 12 months of his contract.

As such, Hutton suggested Steven Gerrard will let him go if a top-class replacement can be signed.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Obviously, they would allow him to go if they could bring somebody in they see as being a higher level.

“If you get the likes of Kalvin Phillips or Bissouma, they are going to play. Are they an upgrade? Yes.

“It’s quite as simple as that. I think at this moment in time, within the Aston Villa team, there’s a lot of inconsistency. I think that’s the problem.

“Steven Gerrard is trying to rectify that. There are certain positions, like in defensive midfield, that he’s probably looking for more.

“I think that you can see that in his selection against Wolves. He wanted to see something different.

“It’s all about who can you bring in? If you can bring in somebody that’s going to make your team better then, of course, ultimately, other players will have to leave.”

Luiz has played 26 times in the league this season.

However, he only featured as a substitute against Wolves as John McGinn, Morgan Sanson and Jacob Ramsey started.
