Aston Villa to sell five starts despite Europa League success with summer squad makeover planned
Aston Villa’s Europa League success alongside Champions League qualification means the club will be able to add to their squad this summer.
That is according to Aston Villa’s former chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, who believes the club also have assets they can sell to raise funds.
The Villans won their first European trophy since 1982 with a dominant 3-0 win over Freiburg, whilst they had already secured Champions League football next season through the Premier League.
Aston Villa will net over £30million in prize money thanks to winning the Europa League this season, whilst Champions League revenue will boost the club’s finances further.
Financial rules have been a problem for Aston Villa over the last few years, whilst the ownership have ambitions to compete with the biggest clubs in Europe.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Aston Villa will now have some “breathing space” against profit and sustainability rules [PSR].
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness predicts a “busy” summer for the club, with changes expected in the squad.
| Total Revenue | £391m |
| Matchday Revenue | £80m |
| Commercial Revenue | £71m |
| Wages-To-Turnover | 71% |
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It’s great for them because they’ll have the bonus of a Europa League budget as well as Champions League money guaranteed for next year.
“I’m really pleased for Villa because we know the problems they’ve had with PSR. They’ve been on that line and this gives them a bit of breathing space. Now, the key thing for them will be squad depth. It’s quality and depth.
“I do expect to see a number of changes in that Villa squad. I do expect to see four or five of the existing squad going, and some new ones coming in. I expect it to be a very busy window for them.
“It’s one of the clubs that has got that chance to do it. They’ve got some assets to sell to try and reduce that net spend. But I do think they’re going to push the boat out slightly, and they’re going to make some big signings.
“So I expect it to be busy at Villa Park because that will give them the confidence and the attraction to get the sort of quality of players they’re looking at.”
Aston Villa ahead of Leeds in race for new midfielder
Aston Villa’s summer transfer window could already be off to a positive start in their pursuit of Sporting midfielder Hidemasa Morita.
Sources have told Football Insider that Morita wants to join Aston Villa over Leeds this summer, with the 31-year-old having already confirmed he will be leaving Sporting when his contract expires.
The Japan international has earned 40 caps for his country and played over 100 times for Sporting across three seasons.
A defensive midfielder, Morita could be a replacement for captain John McGinn who could be leaving Aston Villa this summer.
