Aston Villa insider reveals update on Unai Emery quitting the club
Unai Emery could be into his last season as Aston Villa manager as wealthy clubs circle for his services ahead of next summer.
That is according to former Villa chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes the boss may be tempted to leave due to Villa's financial restrictions.
Emery has written himself into Aston Villa folklore since being appointed as their manager in October 2022.
The Basque boss delivered long-awaited silverware last season and has had them constantly competing at the top of the Premier League alongside much wealthier clubs.
Doubts have been raised over his long-term future at the club, with Villa still limited by financial constraints despite spending around £280million in the summer window.
They were forced into some big spending following the departures of several key players, and Emery may see fit to leave the club next summer if he is offered the chance to explore a new challenge.
Unai Emery could be 'lured away' from Aston Villa next summer
Former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – thinks Emery will have offers from several top sides next year.
UEFA's strict squad-cost ratio limitations have forced Villa into sales of key players and budgeting, with the club bound to a settlement agreement that means they must continue lowering their SCR for the next few seasons.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness explained that it could force Emery out, saying: “Concern? No. Pay attention to it? Yes. I think that is the way I would characterise it right now. Emery is going to be focused on this season, but I think even he will be tested by the UEFA rules.
"He is going to be feeling constrained in terms of his talent as a manager when he is up against clubs that have got a much freer chequebook, so while he has got great owners who have backed him 100 per cent, and that’s why he’s going to fight it through because of loyalty to them, even he will say ‘look, at some stage I’m going to be offered a club that doesn’t have these constraints’, and he will be a sought-after commodity.
"There will be concern about him being lured away, and that will probably be next summer, I think, if it’s going to happen.”
Villa plotting Jean-Philippe Mateta approach in January
Villa recorded the highest positive transfer balance in the Premier League over the summer, raising over £300m in player sales and making £50m in profit.
They are already planning for the January window, with sources telling Football Insider that Villa are planning to swoop for Palace star Mateta, who wants out as he disputes his contract with the capital club.
Mateta will be available for a cut-price fee and Emery is an admirer of his playing style.
