Aston Villa could have doubts about signing Brentford striker Igor Thiago following his display for Brazil against Morocco in the World Cup.

According to Sports Boom, Thiago is emerging as a prime target for Aston Villa this summer, as Unai Emery looks to strengthen his squad before their return to the Champions League.

Thiago had plenty of interest in the January transfer window from the likes of Tottenham and Newcastle.

The 24-year-old signed a new long-term contract at Brentford in February, which runs until 2031, but that is not expected to put off any interested clubs.

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins' future is uncertain at the club this summer, whilst Emery may have to replace Morgan Rogers in attack.

Selling Rogers could hand Emery around £100m to spend in the transfer market, with Brentford set to demand near £80m to let Thiago depart.

Igor Thiago's form a concern for Aston Villa

Thiago scored 22 goals for Brentford this season, earning him a place in Brazil's starting line-up for their opening World Cup match against Morocco.

However, Thiago came into the tournament having only scored once in his final six appearances of the season.

Against Morocco, Thiago also failed to find the back of the net, missing a big chance and being replaced by Luiz Henrique in the 62nd minute.

Thiago failed to get into the game, which ended 1-1, with the striker only having 16 touches of the ball, and winning only three of his seven duels.

Also failing to successfully complete any dribbles, it was a tough World Cup debut for Thiago.

Aston Villa could instead make an approach for Arsenal forward Leandro Trossard, as Football Insider reported, as the Gunners could accelerate a move for Club Brugge's Christos Tzolis.

Arsenal could be open to Leandro Trossard sale

Trossard would have the capabilities to play either out wide or as a central striker.

The 31-year-old may be available to leave Arsenal this summer as they look to sell a first team star to be able to bring in players like Rogers.

Arsenal are the favourites to sign Rogers, who has been at Aston Villa since joining from Middlesborough for just £8m.

Any sale would represent a healthy profit for Aston Villa, though the club remain keen to keep the 23-year-old at the club.
