Aston Villa should reignite Niccolo Pisilli chase as electric stats emerge from Italy win
Aston Villa have a long-term interest in Roma youngster Niccolo Pisilli, having attempted to sign him in 2025.
The 21-year-old is among Italy’s finest talents, and played his part in their 1-0 win over Luxembourg on Wednesday by assisting Pio Esposito’s winner.
Pisilli is under contract at Roma until 2029, with his last extension coming back in February last year.
The Villans are expected to be among several clubs watching the midfielder’s progress, after he became a more prominent member of Roma’s team in the second half of the season.
Villa transfer chiefs have every right to show ambition this summer after qualifying for the Champions League, and a move for Pisilli may be the result.
Niccolo Pisilli’s remarkable stats explain Villa’s interest
Villa’s interest in Pisilli is well-established and was initially reported back in January 2025, along with several other Premier League clubs.
At the time, the midfielder had just broken into the Roma first team and was beginning to play a significant role in Serie A.
This season saw him left on the bench for much of the first half of the season before breaking through once more.
A box-to-box central midfielder, Pisilli has often featured alongside the experienced Bryan Cristante or Manu Kone this season.
The Italy international can also play in a slightly more advanced position, but naturally prefers to sit deeper.
He was deployed on the right side of the midfield for interim manager Silvio Baldini’s team that beat Luxembourg on Wednesday, and produced a thrilling display.
Pisilli claimed the assist from the corner on Wednesday and created another chance. The 21-year-old also completed two successful dribbles and several defensive interventions.
He would win almost all of his duels and win a free-kick, in what was a superb display from the youngster.
Villa will hope to exploit Roma relationship
In recent months, Villa and Roma appear to have developed a strong business relationship.
The Villans sanctioned Donyell Malen’s move to the Italian club in January, with the forward extraordinarily scoring 15 goals in 20 games since.
Negotiations for Argentine winger Matias Soule appear to be moving in the right direction, too, with the 23-year-old on Villa’s target list.
Transfer chiefs will attempt to use those connections once more in a potential pursuit of Pisilli this summer, should they reignite their interest.
