Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn had a night to forget as Brazil beat Scotland 3-0 in the World Cup on Wednesday.

Steve Clarke's team were outclassed by the South American nation at Miami Stadium on 24 June, with Vinivisu Junior scoring a brace before the break and Matheus Cunha adding the third at around the hour mark.

The Villans' captain looked out of place coming up against the midfield trio of Bruno Guimaraes, Casemiro and Lucas Paqueta.

Scotland's media expressed their disappointment with McGinn's lack of impact against Brazil, as the Villa midfielder started on the left wing before switching to the opposite side.

The 31-year-old is coming off a sensational season under Unai Emery, scoring five goals in the Europa League as the Lions ended their 30-year trophy drought by lifting the trophy in Turkiye.

McGinn and his compatriots will now be hoping results elsewhere go in Scotland's favour to qualify for the last 32 as one of the eight best third-place teams.

Scotland media blast John McGinn after loss vs Brazil

McGinn has been a key player for Clarke in North America, starting all three group-stage games.

Scotland went off to a dream start in their first World Cup game in 28 years, winning 1-0 against Haiti as the Villa midfielder found the back of the net, but since then, they've lost to Morocco and Brazil.

The Scotsman gave McGinn a rating of 4/10 due to his lacklustre display, writing, "Couldn't influence the game at all. Looked uncomfortable wide right and left."

BBC Sport Scotland called out the midfielder's display as well, giving him 5/10, with journalist Andy Burke writing, "Well short of his influential best. Just could not find a way into the game."

John McGinn future examined at Aston Villa

Sources told Football Insider in April that McGinn could be sold to Everton for the right price due to Villa's financial restrictions, with the midfielder valued at £20million.

The Scotland international will enter the final two years of his contract at Villa ahead of next season and it will be interesting to see whether Emery is willing to part ways with an influential member of the squad in B6.

McGinn has spent eight long years at the Lions, bringing them up from the Championship and captaining them in the Champions League, but it remains to be seen what the future holds for the experienced midfielder this summer.
