Chelsea agree £170m+ Morgan Rogers deal after record offer accepted
Chelsea have reached a verbal agreement to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a record deal worth £117million, sources have told Football Insider.
The 23-year-old will undergo a medical on Monday before heading off for his summer holidays with his future finally tied down.
He has agreed a six-year contract with Chelsea in a deal worth in excess of £170m including fee and wages.
Rogers will become the most expensive Englishman ever, breaking the record set earlier this summer by Elliot Anderson's £116m move to Manchester City.
Arsenal had been leading the race to sign the England international forward, who scored 14 goals across all competitions this season.
But Rogers was keen to sign for Chelsea and is set to get his wish, with Villa having reluctantly accepted a club-record offer.
The Villans signed the winger from Middlesbrough in 2024, agreeing a fee worth up to £15m if all add-ons were met.
The Championship club are also thought to have included a 20 per cent sell-on clause, which will result in a sizeable pay day.
Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers to be reunited
Xabi Alonso has been key to Chelsea's deal to sign Rogers, with a plan clearly in place for the 23-year-old.
The Spaniard has often been known to deploy a three-at-the-back formation, with the new man likely to occupy one of the attacking roles.
He will undoubtedly be alongside Cole Palmer, who is hoping to have a stronger season under Alonso.
The 24-year-old scored 27 goals and provided 15 assists in his first season after joining from Manchester City, but has slowed down since due to injury and the team's struggles.
The prospect of Palmer playing alongside Rogers is an alluring one, however, and the pair know each other very well from their time in the Man City academy.
The 'cold' celebration emerged between them, with the pair having been at the centre of a debate over who started it.
"My boy Morgz did one for Middlesbrough, so I told him I’d do it too if I scored,” Palmer admitted earlier this month.
"It symbolises joy, passion and hard determination for the game, plus it's funny as it works well with my name.”
Rogers added: "Yeah, he definitely copied me. It’s my celebration. Check the timeline, I did it first.”
Rogers deal continues record-breaking transfer window
For some time now, the market for Premier League players has been booming, but this summer has seen it completely explode.
Rogers' move will now become the second most expensive Premier League signing ever, after Alexander Isak's £125m move to Liverpool last summer and just £1m above the Anderson deal.
And this summer is far from over. The window does not shut until the start of September, with many of the more expensive deals usually coming towards the end.
With much more money to be thrown around, this summer appears set to smash spending records yet again.
