FIFA told to increase Aston Villa injury compensation after 'bad' Amadou Onana blow - expert
Aston Villa have a concrete argument for further compensation after Amadou Onana was injured at the 2026 World Cup.
That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that FIFA should have matched inflation since the Club Protection Programme (CPP) was introduced.
FIFA came up with the idea of insurance should a player get injured at a World Cup back in 2012, with a club provided up to £6.6million in compensation.
It is believed that Villa's No.24 earns £6.7m per year, and having suffered an ACL injury against USA on Tuesday, 7 July, he could be sidelined for that entire period.
The long-term injury could totally change Unai Emery's transfer plans, but the funds from FIFA are unlikely to come all at once, providing little help this summer.
Wages and transfer fees have changed drastically since 2012, when CPP was first introduced, sparking the suggestion that the rules need revisiting.
FIFA must revisit World Cup compensation after Amadou Onana blow
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson raised those exact concerns, but insisted that the current amount will be a boost for Villa.
"It's bad, but I think the FIFA compensation system... If it's not been going up with inflation, then clearly there's going to be some push for that to happen," he said.
"Certainly, if that was the number in 2012, it paid for most players, I would think, in the Premier League at the top half of the table.
"I think there's a good argument to increase it, but from the Villans' perspective, the key thing is that they have some major contribution towards the hit that they're going to have from it."
Multiple names have already been floated across as potential replacements, such as Douglas Luiz and Lamine Camara, but the Villans are yet to make a concrete move.
How could the injury impact Aston Villa's transfer plans?
There is no doubt that Emery will be desperate for another midfielder, with Boubacar Kamara already attempting to regain fitness for the new season.
Emi Martinez is expected to depart Villa Park, so a new goalkeeper must be high on the list, plus a new centre-back, and potentially two new full-backs.
If Villa really are desperate for a defensive midfielder, they may have no choice but to cash in on Morgan Rogers, who is gaining interest from Arsenal.
A lot has been made about the club's finances, or lack thereof, meaning that one huge player may need to be sacrificed before any business can be done.
