Japanese media have praised Zion Suzuki for his performance in the World Cup against the Netherlands as Aston Villa eye a move for his services.

Suzuki played the full 95 minutes as Japan began their World Cup journey with a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands on Sunday night.

He was beaten by two expert finishes by Virgil van Dijk and Crysencio Summerville, but Keito Nakamura and Daichi Kamada made sure they came away with something.

Villa are reportedly keen on a move for the 23-year-old Parma star amid uncertainty over Emi Martinez's future at the club.

They will have been impressed by Suzuki on Sunday night as he made several strong saves to earn Hajime Moriyasu's side a maiden point in Group F.

Suzuki has shared goalkeeping duties with Edoardo Corvi at Parma over the last 12 months, but ended the recent campaign as their clear number one.

He was named in the IFFHS Asian Men's Team of the Year for both 2024 and 2025 and earned his 25th cap for his country on Sunday night.

How did Japanese media rate Zion Suzuki vs the Netherlands?

Despite representing Japan at international level, Suzuki was born in New Jersey, United States to a Ghanaian father and Japanese mother.

He will be keen to impress in the country of his birth this summer as Japan eye a deep World Cup run, and will clearly be key to any success they are set to enjoy.

There was little he could do to stop either goal, but the Parma keeper still made four saves and prevented 0.16 xG, with seven recoveries and 10 accurate passes.

Football Channel Japan handed Suzuki an 'A' rating and reviewed his performance by saying: "The goalkeeper, who stopped four shots on target, was named MVP. Had Suzuki not saved a powerful shot by forward Donyell Malen in the third minute, the course of the match would likely have been very different.

"Although he ultimately conceded two goals, both were near-impossible saves given their trajectories, and he stopped every shot that came within his reach. His handling of high balls was also solid, and his performance gave ample reason for optimism in his World Cup debut."

Soccer Digest gave him a 6.5 rating and wrote: "He made a string of fine saves but was beaten by high shots and well-placed goals. Conceding two goals was perhaps unavoidable."

While GOAL Japan offered the 23-year-old the same rating and praised his showing by saying: "He reacted instantly to Malen’s powerful shot to save the team. Just before halftime, he also made a fine save to deny a header from a Roma forward off a corner kick."

Aston Villa finally ready to sell Emiliano Martinez, 'big offer' will get deal done

What is the latest on Martinez's future at Villa?

With Suzuki impressing on the world's biggest stage, the Villans may well be more open to letting Martinez leave this summer.

His exit already seems likely, with sources exclusively revealing to Football Insider that Villa are ready to sell Martinez in the coming months.

Juventus are reportedly holding talks with his camp ahead of a possible move, with Gianluca Di Marzio reporting that they have agreed personal terms in the last few days.

His latest update claims that Juve see Martinez as a top target between the sticks and are aiming to close on a deal for his services very soon.
