Leon Goretzka set for 'huge role' at Aston Villa after team hit by teammate's 'big' injury
Leon Goretzka's experience will make him a key man for Aston Villa once he returns from injury.
That is the opinion of former senior Villa scout, Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.
The 31-year-old joined the Villans on a free transfer in the summer after leaving Bayern Munich, but has yet to make an appearance.
Goretzka could well return next week when Villa host Fenerbahce in the Champions League, but Unai Emery will be excited about far more than his ability on the pitch.
The Germany international brings huge experience into the dressing room, having won countless titles during his eight years with Bayern Munich.
Goretzka has signed a two-year contract at Villa Park, with the club holding the option for an additional year.
Leon Goretzka to cover 'big loss' for Aston Villa
Villa were held to a 2-2 draw by Brentford on Saturday, conceding just minutes after they had taken the lead.
It is a young team that has lost plenty of experience, and a presence like that of Goretzka's will help in similar situations.
"He's 31, he's won everything, and as I say, you're going to buy the experience that he's got," King told Football Insider.
"Usually, it costs you an awful lot of money, but he's come from Bayern Munich. He's a free transfer. Great experience.
"Of course, [Amadou] Onana is still injured, so that's a big loss for Villa as well, especially when you've sold [Youri] Tielemans.
"But if this player comes in, for a free transfer, he's won everything at Bayern Munich. He could certainly have a huge role in the football club. Certainly over the next two seasons, if he's fit."
Where will Goretzka play for Villa?
Emery's favoured formation at Villa features two deeper midfielders behind more attacking midfield supporting a front three.
On Saturday, those three roles were occupied by Boubacar Kamara, Joao Gomes, and Emiliano Buendia who was later replaced by Ibrahim Mbaye.
Goretzka occupied the more forward midfield spot for much of his last season with Bayern, although he is more than capable of playing the deeper role, too.
The Germany international will certain strengthen the options in both positions for Emery, who will be glad to add his winning mentality to the dressing room.
