Amadou Onana blasted after what Danny Murphy noticed from Aston Villa star in Belgium draw
Amadou Onana’s World Cup campaign began in troubled fashion as the midfielder struggled in Belgium’s 1-1 draw to Egypt.
The Aston Villa star was given the nod to start against the African side but made little to no impact throughout.
For most of his time on the pitch, the midfielder struggled to keep possession or create anything of note for the European side.
As a result, he was pulled off the pitch 56 minutes in, and Danny Murphy was quick to slam his performance as Belgium suffered a shock early into the World Cup.
Onana had been a regular for Villa this season and made 25 appearances in the Premier League as they finished fourth.
Yet, this form has clearly not continued for Belgium in a poor opening display.
Danny Murphy: ‘Amadou Onana did not impact the game at all’
For Onana, his performance against Egypt could not have been any worse.
According to Fotmob on 15 June, the midfielder did have a shot or create a single chance, only completed 86 per cent of his passes, he was dispossessed once and also picked up a yellow card.
As a result, many were quick to pick up on just how poor he was, with Murphy not holding back his criticism of the Villa star when reviewing his performance on the BBC.
He said when commentating on Belgium’s game: “Onana was anonymous really, poor afternoon’s work from him. Didn’t impact the game at all; couldn’t get going and gave the ball away too often.”
When do Belgium next play?
Belgium’s next game is against Iran on 21 June as they look to bounce back and pick up their first victory of the tournament.
This is then followed by a match against New Zealand on 27 June, which will be the final game of Group G.
Onana will be hoping that he will be given a second chance to impress in these games and prove to the manager that he is capable of making an impact in this year’s World Cup.
Heavy expectations are on Belgium this summer, with many of their golden generation now reaching the end of their careers as they look to finally win silverware for their nation.
However, if they are able to win the group after their surprise draw to Egypt on Monday, which has no doubt dented their plans so far.
