Joao Gomes put in a wonderful performance for Aston Villa on Friday in their 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich.

The 25-year-old netted against the Bundesliga champions and was easily one of the best players on the pitch.

The Brazil international was brought into the club this summer from Wolverhampton Wanderers after Villa sold Youri Tielemans to Manchester United.

There were reservations from the fanbase when the midfielder arrived at the club about his ability after he was part of a side that finished bottom of the Premier League last season.

However, Gomes proved against Bayern that he will be an excellent replacement for the Belgium international.

Many of his stats on Friday were superb, with some even exceeding what Tielemans was averaging in the Premier League last season.

Joao Gomes wows in friendly vs Bayern Munich

While it is hard to judge a player during a friendly match, there is no doubt Gomes was excellent on Friday.

Against one of the best teams in the world, the midfielder ran the show in the centre of the pitch, and was rewarded for his performance with an excellent goal from distance.

According to Fotmob on 7 August, Gomes’ stats were simply fantastic against Bayern.

Overall, he completed 85 per cent of his passes, had three shots with one being on target, played nine passes in the final third, completed five long balls out of an attempted eight, won six out of 12 ground duels, made three tackles and completed four recoveries throughout.

Therefore, Gomes was not only influential in attack, but also managed to be effective in defence.

How do Gomes’ stats compare to Youri Tielemans’?

When comparing Gomes’ stats against Bayern to Tielemans’ average in the Premier League last season, the former Wolves star outperforms the midfielder in many areas.

Overall, the Belgium international averaged 86.8 passing completion, 2.08 shots, 0.57 shots on target, 1.71 accurate long balls, 4.93 ground duels won with a 59.1 win rate, 1.33 tackles and 4.74 recoveries per 90 minutes.

As a result, Gomes could prove to be an excellent replacement for Tielemans if he can keep this form up going into the new season.

However, it remains to be seen if the midfielder is capable of replicating these displays consistently at a competitive level.
