Aston Villa kick-start their Premier League season on Sunday when they travel to Brighton and Hove Albion as they look to pick up a difficult three points on the road.

Despite the highs of the 2025-26 campaign, optimism around the Birmingham outfit is at a low going into the match.

Multiple star players have been sold this summer, with Ezri Konsa looking likely to be the next one out of the door.

While Unai Emery has been able to bring in some replacements, it has been a disappointing transfer window to date.

As a result, a defeat is expected by many ahead of their trip to the AMEX Stadium.

However, Fabian Hurzeler’s terrible record against Unai Emery and Villa could give the visitors hope of a victory.

Fabian Hurzeler has never beaten Unai Emery or Aston Villa

Since moving to Brighton in 2024, Hurzeler has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most promising managers.

This was shown last season, when he was able to guide the Seagulls to Conference League qualification.

However, one thing that has eluded him since moving to England is being able to get a victory against Aston Villa.

In his four meetings against the Birmingham outfit, he has drawn one and lost the other three, with Emery seemingly outwitting him each time.

Therefore, while a defeat may seem like an inevitability among many Aston Villa fans, history suggests that the club should not fear the Seagulls, and there is a good chance that they could actually come away with a victory.

What are Opta’s predictions for Brighton vs Aston Villa?

Unfortunately for Aston Villa fans, Opta is not optimistic about their chances of coming away with three points on Sunday.

The supercomputer believes that there is a 44.1 per cent chance that Brighton are able to secure the victory, compared to Villa’s 31.1 per cent chance.

However, one thing that could work in the Birmingham outfit’s favour is the fact that the Seagulls were playing in the Conference League qualifiers on Thursday, away to Tromso.

Therefore, their team could easily be fatigued for the clash and may not be able to perform at their best.

However, it remains to be seen who comes out on top at the AMEX Stadium as both clubs look to start their Premier League campaign on a high.
