Morgan Rogers: How English media reacted to Aston Villa star's cameo vs Costa Rica
Morgan Rogers came off the bench as England beat Costa Rica 3-0 in their final World Cup warm-up on Wednesday.
The Aston Villa midfielder's shot was spilled by Abraham Madriz and poked in by his club teammate, Ollie Watkins, in the final stages, after Declan Rice and Anthony Gordon had put the Three Lions into a commanding lead.
The 23-year-old came on for Harry Kane and spent a brief period occupying the striker position, with his ability to play in several positions likely part of the decision to include him this summer.
Rogers' best bet to start against Croatia will likely come off the left, however, although Gordon's goal and assist has made him the firm favourite.
Nonetheless, the midfielder remains a superb option for Tuchel and England with the ability to change a game single-handedly.
The interest in Rogers from the likes of Arsenal is likely to take a back seat until England's World Cup is over, but it is expected to be a key story this summer.
How the English media reacted to Morgan Rogers' display
Rogers earned his place in the England squad off the back of a brilliant season for Villa.
The 23-year-old scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists across all competitions as Unai Emery's team won the Europa League, with key performances in the biggest games.
Rogers assisted and scored against Liverpool in the game that secured a top five finish in the Premier League and he would do the same in the Europa League final.
The midfielder will now hope to bring that success to England, in what is his first major international tournament.
The former Middlesbrough man should have marked Wednesday's cameo with a goal after he was found well by Eberechi Eze, but stroked the ball wide of the post.
It was a strong display nevertheless, however, with Rogers creating two chances, taking the shot that led to Watkins' goal, and earning a free-kick in just 27 minutes.
The Evening Standard gave the midfielder a seven out of 10 for his display, and wrote that he "influenced the game immediately."
Similarly, The Mirror gave the "lively" Rogers a six out of 10, while The Sun gave the same rating.
Rogers - England's secret weapon?
With a player like Rogers at his disposal, Tuchel would be mad not to find a significant role for him this summer.
Even if he is not going to start over Gordon or Marcus Rashford on the left, he should at least be coming off the bench.
The 23-year-old has proved on countless occasions that he has the ability to impact games massively, and his fearless ability to carry the ball and score goals will be invaluable.
That is exactly why Mikel Arteta and Arsenal are so desperate to sign Rogers this summer, and a strong World Cup could change the situation at Villa.
