Stefan Borson reveals Morgan Rogers to Man City transfer reality amid buy-back claim

Manchester City will have to pay the same price as any other club as Aston Villa become resigned to losing Morgan Rogers this summer.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Citizens would have pulled the trigger on a bargain deal already were it available.

Ben Jacobs sparked pandemonium on social media after reporting that Man City hold a buy-back in the Villa star's contract from his move to Middlesbrough in 2023.

That claim has since been heavily disputed, and Borson has offered his thoughts on the situation as Enzo Maresca prepares for the summer market.

Morgan Rogers buy-back claims completely squashed

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: "I think it's extremely unlikely. The only real way in which it could happen is theoretically that City had some kind of rights in the original deal, which we do know was the case.

"Perhaps, and this is really a stretch, but perhaps theoretically City said, 'Well, what we'll do is we will waive our right to exercise if the parties agree that in the future, our original right is maintained to buy back the player'.

"But it seems so unlikely to me. I think it's just a misunderstanding or a misremembering of the order of of events. I think it was Ben Jacobs that said it. I mean Ben is usually very well informed, but I just can't believe it's right.

"Theoretically, it could be subject to some kind of third party ownership rules. There could be a scenario, but it's unlikely and I think it's an error.

"So I don't think City have any buy-back. If they did have a buy-back, let's say, at anything under £60million, it would be a complete no-brainer.

"Even if you don't want the player, you've got some profit there. If there were a buyback, City would have already exercised it."

Enzo Maresca already has one big-money transfer on his radar

Maresca is under huge pressure to take over the reigns from Pep Guardiola, and he will feel that diving into the market will help him.

The Citizens have already lost Bernardo Silva and John Stones in free transfers, and both will need to be replaced by experienced figures.

In addition to those two positions, it is understood that Maresca wants to reunite with Enzo Fernandez due to their success at Chelsea together.

It is hugely unlikely that City would be able to afford to sign Rogers and Fernandez, especially if the former's buy-back clause is non-existent.
