Aston Villa are making a mistake by signing striker, his full stats are actually alarming

Jean-Philippe Mateta has emerged as an Aston Villa target late in the transfer window this summer as they search for attacking reinforcements.

Crystal Palace have already rejected a bid from the Birmingham outfit for the 29-year-old striker, with the offer being below their valuation of him.

Villa and Unai Emery are desperate for a new striker before the window closes, with Ollie Watkins attracting interest from Al Hilal.

Therefore, Mateta could prove to be a direct replacement for the England international if a deal is struck, and could lead Villa’s front line for the rest of the campaign.

However, when examining his stats, there is little to suggest that he is a suitable replacement for Watkins.

What are Jean-Philippe Mateta’s stats?

On the face of it, Mateta could be an excellent signing for Aston Villa.

According to Fotmob on 25 August, he averaged 0.49 goals, a 0.59 xG, 2.55 shots and 1.30 shots on target per 90 minutes in the Premier League last season.

However, he also averaged 0.00 assists, a 0.05 xA, a 62.2 per cent passing completion rate, 0.36 chances created, 0.08 big chances created and 0.57 successful dribbles with a 45.2 per cent overall success rate.

Therefore, if The Athletic’s report is correct, Villa may do well not to submit another bid for Mateta.

How do Mateta’s stats compare to Ollie Watkins’?

In comparison, Watkins outperforms Mateta in many stats in the Premier League from last season.

Per 90 minutes, the Villa striker was averaging 0.50 goals, a 0.48 xG, 2.62 shots, 1.20 shots on target, 0.09 assists, a 0.04 xA, a 72.7 per cent passing completion rate, 0.73 chances created, 0.13 big chances created and 0.82 successful dribbles with a 46.4 per cent overall success rate.

Therefore, not only is Watkins a creator, but it is also clear that he is a better goalscorer as well.

As a result, Villa may be wise to move on to other targets before the end of the transfer window.
