Aston Villa fans say the same thing as Jean-Philippe Mateta 'bid' submitted
Aston Villa have reportedly seen a bid rejected for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta as the end of the transfer window edges closer.
The Eagles have felt that Villa’s bid is well below their valuation of the 29-year-old striker and would need a much higher bid to part ways with the France international.
Unai Emery’s side are desperate for a new striker before the transfer window slams shut, with Ollie Watkins heavily linked with a move to Al Hilal, while Tammy Abraham is currently injured.
Meanwhile, Mateta has been pushing for a move away from Selhurst Park and was recently in a dispute with the club as he argued that the last year of his contract was not valid.
However, with the last year of his deal remaining valid, he could still leave Palace before the transfer window is over.
Villa remains one potential destination, but despite the club’s dire situation, supporters do not want to see Mateta move to the Birmingham outfit.
Aston Villa fans do not want Jean-Philippe Mateta to sign
On the face of it, if The Athletic’s report is correct, Mateta could be a great signing for Villa.
The striker has scored at least 12 goals in his last three Premier League campaigns and has been key to Palace winning three major trophies in the past two campaigns.
However, his off-the-field disputes with the Eagles, combined with his drastically different playing style to Watkins, have made Villa fans wary.
As a result, many have now gone to X to call for Villa to avoid striking a deal for Mateta, and simply move on to other targets.
Who else are Aston Villa linked to this summer?
Football Insider has exclusively revealed that Villa are considering a move for AC Milan star Rafael Leao late in the transfer window.
The 27-year-old attacker has been linked with a host of clubs in recent weeks, including Leeds United, with the Italian giants open to offers.
He is pushing to leave the San Siro for a new challenge after seven years at the club.
However, it remains to be seen if Villa make an offer for the attacker before the transfer window closes on 1 September.
