Keith Wyness blasts 'ridiculous rules' as Aston Villa to lose big chunk of Morgan Rogers fee
Aston Villa will add Middlesbrough's 20 per cent sell-on clause "into the calculation" when it comes to their decision over Morgan Rogers' future this summer.
That is according to former Villa chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that his former club would not get the PSR boost that they are hoping for if they opted to cash in.
The 23-year-old is set for another summer of heavy speculation surrounding his future, with Arsenal and Manchester City both keen to add him to their squads.
Rogers' price tag has already been set at £100million, a figure which could see Middlesbrough set £20m, and Wyness believes it is "ridiculous" that Villa are even having to consider a sale.
The former Manchester City academy talent dazzled with 25 goal contributions in all competitions this term, as he continues to establish himself as one of the Premier League's brightest stars.
He has been a focal point of Villa's development as a club in recent years, but they face a serious risk of not being able to keep hold of him for much longer.
Aston Villa backed into corner by 'ridiculous' rules
Villa's former chief Wyness - who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a consultancy business advising elite clubs - believes that the PSR rules are "ridiculous" since they force clubs to consider sales of players like Rogers.
The former boardroom man pointed to the fact that owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens have deep enough pockets to close the gap between the Villans and the big six, but added that they are not allowed to use their fortune to its full effect.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness suggested that his former club are being backed into a corner by PSR when it comes to the futures of players like Rogers.
"Rogers' sale is the one that would make a big difference in PSR. But nevertheless, if you're having to pay a 20 % sell-on clause back to Middlesbrough, that comes into your calculations about whether it really is worth it," he said.
"The impact isn't quite as big as you would have hoped from selling a £100m player. Especially if he has a good World Cup, which I'd expect him to do, then his value may well go up even more.
"For Villa, it's these ridiculous rules that I think really penalise clubs that have got the ability and the resources to fund growth without jeopardising the club, and yet they're not being allowed to put money in.
"It still rankles that they can't make that break into the top six and be allowed to spend the money in a way that does not jeopardise the club because Sawiris and Edens have definitely got the deep pockets to do it."
Man City ready to beat Arsenal to Morgan Rogers deal
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown recently told Football Insider that Manchester City won't let Arsenal beat them to Rogers this summer.
The ex-recruitment man made it clear that the Citizens have been paying close attention to the forward's progress ever since he left them back in 2023.
Brown suggested that he "wouldn't be surprised" to see the Etihad Stadium side move back in for their former star, as he feels that they cannot risk letting him go and strengthen Arsenal's squad.
However, he also noted that a strong World Cup would see Rogers emerge onto the radar of several top clubs across Europe.
