'An awful lot of work to do' - Garth Crooks makes admission about Tottenham defender
By Danny Wright
Garth Crooks has admitted that he has been left stunned with how well Tottenham defender Kieran Trippier has performed lately.
Trippier, 27, has fashioned himself into one of the Premier League’s top right-backs in recent months after Kyle Walker fell out of favour at Spurs, and that was the case again on Saturday when he starred in the 4-0 hammering of Huddersfield at the John Smith’s Stadium.
The former Burnley full-back supplied two assists in what was a straightforward win for Tottenham which saw them move up to third in the standings.
BBC pundit Crooks named Trippier, as well as his team-mates Ben Davies and Harry Kane, in his team of the week for his part in the win against David Wagner’s side, and has admitted that his rise to the top has come as a bit of a shock to him.
“I noticed Kieran Trippier when he played for Burnley against Spurs at White Hart Lane, and he stood out then. That seems a long time ago, but if you had asked me then was this lad capable of playing Champions League football, I would have told you he had an awful lot of work to do,” he said on the BBC Sport website.

“But that is precisely the point. Trippier came to Spurs with serious competition for his place in the starting line-up. But the young full-back seems to have done it. He’s been a consistent member of the first-team squad for some time and is playing with bags of confidence in a Spurs set-up bristling with confidence.”
Trippier still has competition to get into Mauricio Pochettino’s starting line-up with Serge Aurier now on the books after he moved from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, seemingly to replace the now-Manchester City full-back Kyle Walker.
However the Ivory Coast international served a one-match suspension against Huddersfield at the weekend, meaning Trippier had an easy pass into Pochettino’s first-team for the game.
The one-time England international has made eight appearances across all competitions for Spurs this season, supplying five assists in the process.
In other Tottenham news, Jamie Redknapp has issued a warning to this Spurs player after the win against Huddersfield.
