'Backpedaling' - Collymore predicts where Tottenham will finish in 17/18 PL season
By Danny Wright
Former Liverpool attacker Stan Collymore has predicted that Tottenham will fail to finish inside the top four in the 2017/18 Premier League season.
Mauricio Pochettino led his side to a second-place finish last term as they fell just short of their London rivals Chelsea in the battle for the title.
Although Spurs were arguably one of the more impressive teams to grace the league last time out, Collymore now believes that they are “backpedaling” after failing to bring in a single new signing this summer.
Tottenham are widely criticised for having a lack of depth in their squad, with players like Vincent Janssen and Moussa Sissoko barely having any input to the first-team despite having a lot of money spent on securing their arrivals last summer.
Collymore, 46, is now left in the belief that they won’t be able to secure Champions League football next year after backing Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool to lock out the top four.

“That’s my top four – and that’s a blow for Arsenal and Spurs. Tottenham are as good as anyone 1-11 but it’s disappointing that so far Mauricio Pochettino hasn’t recruited players who can say to Harry Kane and Dele Alli: ‘Hey, I’m going to take your shirt’,” said Collymore in his column on the Mirror website.
“Unless you buy top-quality players to create competition and show you are moving forward then you are backpedaling and I fear Spurs may be outgunned.”
Tottenham are the only team in the league not to have signed a new player this summer, but have seen their budget boosted with the sale of Kyle Walker to Manchester City, as well as Nabil Bentaleb, Federico Fazio and Clinton N’Jie being flogged on permanent deals.
