Gabby Agbonlahor has called on Patrick Bamford to be axed from the Leeds United starting XI.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England and Aston Villa striker suggested the 27-year-old will be “disappointed” with his recent performances as they have dashed his outside chance of making the England squad for this summer’s European Championships.
Bamford was replaced by Rodrigo Moreno on the hour mark during the Whites’ 2-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend.
On the south coast, he failed to register a shot on goal for the third time in his last four games [Wyscout].
“I still think as I’ve said many times Bamford needs a rest,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“When he came off it didn’t look like an injury, he needs a rest. You can’t play every game of the season.
“He needs a rest, give Rodrigo a go and see what happens. Sometimes you need a rest. Training’s that hard and in games he runs that much.
“He’ll be disappointed too. He’ll be thinking to himself ‘If I could have got five or six goals towards the end of the season I might have got a sniff of getting into the England squad.’
“That’s very unlikely now. The likes of Watkins have carried on scoring and you expect someone like Watkins or Greenwood to get the nod before him, for sure.”
Bamford has started all 34 of Leeds’ Premier League fixtures this season and started the campaign with seven goals in eight games.
However, he has found the net just once in his last nine appearances.
