Bart Verbruggen to Newcastle United: Domino effect to emerge amid James Trafford ‘dream’
Bart Verbruggen of Brighton could be a simple fix as the futures of Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale remain uncertain at Newcastle United.
The Magpies have been strongly linked with the Netherlands’ first-choice goalkeeper ahead of the summer transfer window, and rumours are only likely to heat up over the coming weeks.
Verbruggen reached 100 senior appearances for the Seagulls against Tottenham on Saturday, 18 April, with the 23-year-old reaching eight clean sheets in the Premier League this season.
Newcastle’s transfer chiefs will be lining up deals ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, and Eddie Howe may have just been given the green light to sign a new goalkeeper, thanks to Brighton’s own plans.

According to Sky Sports journalist Florian Pletternberg, Man City’s James Trafford is open to a move after just one season at the Etihad Stadium, having played second-fiddle to Gianluigi Donnarumma.
He is now emerging as Brighton’s “dream” target should Verbruggen leave, with Lens’ Robin Risser and Freiburg’s Noah Atubolu also being shortlisted ahead of the summer.
With the Citizens not wanting to lose Trafford, it would make more sense for Trafford to leave on loan, but it would appear that Verbruggen could leave permanently, and the Magpies should target the latter.

At just 23 years of age, the Dutchman could be Newcastle’s shot-stopper for several years, and with European aspirations at St James’ Park, it seems like a no-brainer decision this summer.
How much will Brighton ask for Bart Verbruggen?
Verbruggen has proven himself as a Premier League-quality goalkeeper, impressing across three seasons at the Amex Stadium, now being linked with a move to a big-name club.
Keith Wyness told Football Insider that Newcastle may have to splash £50million on the player’s signature, but the Seagulls’ sealing an early deal for Trafford could help bring the price down.
If the Magpies were to offer anywhere near that price tag, it is unlikely that Brighton could turn down the money, especially if they already had a replacement in their crosshairs ahead of next term.
There are likely to be some huge moves for all Premier League clubs once the summer window opens, and Newcastle’s goalkeeper situation will be one of the main talking points.
