BBC Radio Leeds pundit Noel Whelan was left drooling over the performance of Caleb Ekuban in Leeds United’s 2-1 win against Bolton at Elland Road on Friday afternoon.

Ekuban, 24, wasted no time in putting Leeds ahead in the opening minutes when he smashed home a loose ball in the box.

The former Chievo striker continued to harry and harass the Bolton defence all afternoon and was unlucky to not get a couple more goals under his belt.

It was the first time that Ekuban has scored in the Championship for Leeds on his 14th attempt and Whelan was full of praise for the Ghanaian forward.

“Overall he’s holding the ball up well, he’s using that body strength that he’s got but more importantly his pace and runs in behind, he scares defenders,” said Whelan as shown on West Yorkshire Sport’s official Twitter account on Saturday.

“He’s taking defenders out of positions, he’s running into corners, he’s doing the defensive work as well.”

Football Insider verdict

Ekuban still has not shown enough to prove that he can be a solid striker option for Leeds. Injuries have been a constant problem for him as well as his form in front of goal. If he can get another four or five goals between now and the end of the campaign then Paul Heckingbottom must consider him as someone who can play a role next season. Otherwise Ekuban is one of those who could potentially be offloaded by Victor Orta having not met expectations at Elland Road. Next up for the Whites is Fulham at Craven Cottage and not many would fancy the Yorkshire club to pick up any points there.

In other Leeds United news, Garry Monk has made a very bold claim about the Whites and has delivered his verdict on the threat of relegation.
