Danny Mills says it is vitally important that West Ham do everything they can to tie attacking star Manuel Lanzini to a new long-term contract at the London Stadium.
The former Manchester City and England defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, says that the Hammers need to learn from the sagas they endured involving Dimitri Payet and Marko Arnautovic and keep the Argentine maestro happy in east London.
As revealed by Football Insider, West Ham have opened talks over a new contract for Lanzini, with just a year left on his current terms.
Mills says that Lanzini does not appear to have the same sort of attitude as his predecessors and insists that makes it even more important to get him committed to a new long-term deal at the club.
Mills told Football Insider: “In the past they’ve lost players, look at Payet and Arnautovic, players who have caused problems – it’s protecting your assets.
“When you’ve got a player of real good quality, that has the ability to play in two or three different positions, is clearly a good character, works hard, you do as much as you can to keep them.
“They’re the sort of players you want around, they’ve been bitten before, that’s the problem they had with Payet, with Arnautovic – not great characters. Now that they’ve got a good one, they need to do everything possible to keep a hold of him in these talks.”
Lanzini endured a frustrating 2018/19 campaign courtesy of injury, a massive setback in the summer of 2018 leaving him ruled out for most of the season.
Back in the squad under Manuel Pellegrini, the 26-year-old has started every game this term, providing an assist against both Brighton and Watford.
