Kevin Phillips has claimed Jurgen Klopp may have fallen out with Mohamed Salah at Liverpool after his early substitution in their 1-0 defeat to Chelsea on Thursday night.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the 2000/01 Premier League Golden Boot winner claimed Salah’s situation sums up Liverpool’s “unbelievable” season after they fell to their fifth consecutive Premier League defeat at Anfield.
Top goalscorer Salah was replaced just after the hour mark by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain with the Reds chasing the game after Mason Mount’s strike just before the interval.
Liverpool are now 22 points off league leaders Manchester City and four points behind the top four.
Asked whether it was crazy to see Salah replaced so early on, Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs: “It was.
“I’m not going to hammer Klopp. At the end of the day, he makes the decision based on what he knows. We’re not privy to what goes on in the dressing room and training ground.
“From a purely footballing point of view, when you take your top goalscorer off when you’re one-nil down there’s always going to be repercussions and the media are going to jump all over it.
“Has there been a fallout? Is Salah going to move on?
“I was very surprised to see Salah come off and you could see the disappointment in his reaction.
“Very, very surprised and it sums up what Liverpool have been about this year.
“They’ve dropped to seventh in the table which is just unbelievable and they’re really struggling to get into that top four and you’ve got an unhappy top goalscorer at the club.
“It’s not happy times for Liverpool at the moment.”
Speaking after the game, Klopp told the press: “In that moment he looked like he felt the intensity tonight and I didn’t want to risk it.
“It is all fine, I make decisions that I think are right in the moment.”
