'Believe me...' - Exclusive: Kevin Phillips verdict on sensational Liverpool return for 25-yr-old

Kevin Phillips insisted all would be forgotten if Raheem Sterling returned to Liverpool and hit the ground running after the winger spoke of a potential return.

However, the former England international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, admitted it would take “a hell of a lot of money” to complete a transfer.

Sterling, 25, hinted at a potential return to the club he made his professional debut while undertaking a Q&A session on his agency’s Instagram.

The Manchester City winger swapped Anfield for the Etihad in the summer of 2015 in a blockbuster £49million deal.

The move left a bitter taste on Merseyside and the England international has endured many a frosty reception at Anfield since.

When asked by Football Insider if Sterling had burnt all bridges with the Premier League leaders, Phillips said: “Football is football. If Sterling went to Liverpool at the end of this season there would be a lot of people disappointed and angry on both sides but if he tore it up in the first two months it would all get forgotten. Believe me.

“I had a smaller version when I went from Villa to Birmingham. On my debut, I scored the winning goal against Sheffield United and it never got spoken about again. People soon forget as long as you start producing for your new side.

“It is interesting comments but it would take a hell of a lot of money to get him out of Man City.

“I just question whether Klopp would want all of the hoorah that comes with it. They have got a settled bunch there.”

Real Madrid have set their sights on Sadio Mane this summer and any potential return for Sterling would surely rest on the Senegal international or Mohammed Salah departing.

In other Liverpool news, Noel Whelan has told Football Insider summer target has the potential to challenge Joe Gomez for his shirt next season.
