Rising star Keanan Bennetts is in line to play for Tottenham in their League Cup clash against Championship side Barnsley on Tuesday night after being omitted from their youth team, according to a reliable journalist.

ESPN FC's Spurs correspondent Dan Kilpatrick reacted to Spurs' announcement of their starting XI for Monday's Premier League 2 clash against Swansea by suggesting that Bennetts could get a senior call-up after he dropped down to the bench.

The left-winger, 18, is a regular for Tottenham Under-23s and is widely regarded at the club for his ability to create and score goals.

Pochettino admitted at his media briefing on Monday that he will use the League Cup as an opportunity to try out the youngsters.

He explained that Marcus Edwards, who he compared to a youthful Lionel Messi 12 months ago, would not play against Barnsley as he will better served continuing his development with the Under-23s.

But the senior door could now open for Bennetts following his omission from the starting XI against Swansea's youth side.

The academy product, who is contracted to Tottenham until next summer, has made 12 appearances for their Under-23s.
