Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez has confirmed that Dwight Gayle picked up an injury after coming on as a substitute against Southampton on Sunday.
The 26-year-old joined the action at St Mary’s in place of Spanish striker Joselu with 20 minutes left to play, although his impact was limited as he cut a lone figure up front.
He was unable to grab the match winner as he continues to look for his first goal of this season, and after the match Rafa Benitez confirmed that he had picked up an injury in his cameo spell.
Speaking after the game to Sky Sports (15/10, 18:00) about the match, the Spanish manager said: “After with the penalty, they were pushing and we had Dwight (Gayle) injured at the end there.
“We finished quite strong and then we could have scored at the end also.
“It’s difficult but at least we get a point and the team finished with ambition.”
Newcastle fans will be concerned after reading the manager’s comments, with Gayle possessing a history of injuries which has kept him out of action in the past.
He limped off against Huddesfield earlier in the campaign and was completely absent for their next game against West Ham, while he missed no less than 10 matches last season with various injuries, including one with his hamstring.
However despite his layoffs he led the scoring charts for the Magpies with 23 goals last season, and he will be hoping to add to the 15 Premier League goals he scored during his time at Crystal Palace.
It awaits to be seen whether the injury is serious or not, but it could be a major blow and leave Benitez with just two fit strikers in his squad, in the shape of Joselu and Aleksandar Mitrovic.
In other Newcastle United news, fans were left raging over the performance of this usually reliable star against Southampton.
