Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez has said that he does not expect any of the club’s current injury layoffs to return for the club’s clash against Chelsea over the weekend.
The Magpies are currently missing defensive star and club captain Jamaal Lascelles, fleet-footed winger Christian Atsu and long term absentee Paul Dummett with their respective blows, with the trio all likely to be featuring in the first team if they were fit.
However, Atsu and Lascelles have missed the last four of the club’s matches, having appeared in all of their league matches prior to their injuries, while Dummett has been out of action since suffering a hamstring injury on the opening day of the season against Tottenham.
Benitez has delivered an update on the trio, and it has proved to be concerning news for the Magpies, with the Spanish boss suggesting that they could well be missing for many of the fixtures over the winter period.
He told the Shields Gazette: “Dummett’s training, but still he needs to have the confidence that he can sprint at 100% and all these things, so still a little time.
“Atsu is still recovering, but still a couple of weeks. We’ll see how he’s going on with his recovery.
“Jamaal, I have been talking with. He can run, but still he needs to manage it a little bit when he has to turn. How long? Chelsea? Very difficult for all three.”
Benitez has been forced to chop and change his side as a result of the injuries, with Dummett’s absence at left back resulting in the likes of natural right back Javi Manquillo and centre back Chancel Mbemba filling in throughout the season.
