Report details what is keeping Benitez at Newcastle after West Ham interest
By Danny Wright
Rafa Benitez is effectively being forced to stay Newcastle as he faces a big compensation fee to leave and that he doesn’t want to face the guilt of letting down the fans or the summer signings, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claims that Benitez, 57, would also have to fork out £5million to break his deal off early after his relationship with owner Mike Ashley was left “beyond repair” after what has largely been seen as a poor summer transfer window for the club.
The Magpies boss went into the summer with the idea of making vast improvements to his squad, but now that the transfer window has closed, his squad doesn’t look too dissimilar to the one that won the Championship title last term.
It is understood that Benitez is now stuck at St. James’ Park as he feels an obligation to work with summer signings who had arrived on Tyneside to work with the Spanish boss, including Florian Lejeune, who is said to have only signed to work with the manager.
The Daily Mail also reports that West Ham are likely to move for Benitez with Slaven Bilic under increased pressure at the London Stadium and that a club would have to pay compensation for the Spanish manager to leave his post at St. James’ Park.

Football Insider Verdict
Benitez is facing a very testing time at St. James’ Park. West Ham clearly want him as their manager after almost landing him in 2015 prior to his move to Real Madrid and it seems that he will only be able to leave the Magpies if a team like the Hammers comes in for him and offers to pay off the rest of his contract. The Spanish manager has had a tough summer and that seems to be solely down to the way that Ashley runs the club. The owner had made it clear that he wants to sell the Tyneside outfit while also promising Benitez full financial flexibility in the summer window to strengthen his squad. Even though they beat the Hammers 3-0 recently, it’s going to be a very long, hard season for the Magpies.
