Benitez plots raid on former club as Newcastle eye 19-year-old attacker - report

By Derek Smithson

Newcastle are interested in signing Liverpool attacker Sheyi Ojo, according to a report.

The Chronicle claim that Rafael Benitez is planning a raid on his former side Liverpool for their 19-year-old winger, who has been playing in the Under-23s this season.

It is understood that the Magpies want two left wingers in the summer window, with Leicester’s Tom Lawrence and Crystal Palace’s Andros Townsend shortlisted.

The report details that Newcastle targeted Ojo last summer and Benitez has asked to be “kept informed” about the Englishman.

Ojo is a highly rated player at Anfield and is blessed with phenomenal pace, but has found his first team opportunities limited recently.

The wide man made just two senior appearances under Jurgen Klopp this season in the FA Cup and has seen several of Liverpool’s other young players get more game time.

He has experienced brief senior football with the Merseyside giants in the past and managed four assists in 13 first team appearances.

Meanwhile, the teenager also benefited from a loan spell in the Championship with Wolves, with three goals and four assists in 19 appearances.

Football Insider verdict:

Newcastle do need some extra ammunition in the wide area and Benitez is set to be given the financial backing to solve that problem. Ojo could surely be lured to St James’ Park for a relatively small fee, but they should consider looking for proven top-flight players to help them on their return to the Premier League. Ojo showed promise during his spell with Wolves in the Championship, but has been unable to convince Liverpool boss Klopp of his qualities. He certainly has the potential to become an influential winger, but Newcastle should consider him as an investment for the future, not for now.

In other Newcastle transfer news, they are receiving strong interest in defender Grant Hanley.
