Darren Bent has claimed Tottenham will “have in mind” up to two attacking midfield stars they can sign for £80million if they lose Christian Eriksen in the final weeks of the summer window.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Spurs and England striker is convinced the club have formulated a transfer plan in the event of the Danish playmaker’s sale.

Eriksen revealed earlier this summer he is looking to quit the club after six years but joined Tottenham on their pre-season tour of Asia with his future still up in air.

Mauricio Pochettino has admitted the 27-year-old could be sold, given his contract stalemate with the club after entering the final year of his current deal.

“Tottenham have to go and buy someone if Eriksen is sold,” Bent told Football Insider. “If you’re going to go and get £80-100million for Eriksen, you’re going to find maybe 2 top class attacking midfielders but then the way the transfer market’s going at the moment, maybe you’re going to get one for that money.

“But the one that comes in is going to be top, top notch – if you’re going to spend £75million you’re going to get the best of the best. I think if they let Eriksen go they need to find someone who can be of a more offensive mindset who can go and create.

“(He’ll be) young, which obviously they’ll go and do and, to be fair, if they look around they could probably pick up one or two. The problem they’re going to have is that everyone’s going to know that if they sell Christian Eriksen for £80 million, they’ve got £80million to spend. That’s
where it becomes unfair.

“It’s a tough one because obviously you’d like to keep Christian Eriksen but he’s got one year left on his contract. Do you let him walk away for free? I personally wouldn’t.

“I’d sell him now and get that £80million. Like I said, as soon as they sell him, they’re going to have two players in mind who they can go and sign for £75-80million, get that top notch attacking midfielder back in.”

Tottenham are in hot pursuit of Real Betis attacking midfielder Giovani Lo Celso, although it remains to be seen whether he is being targeted to replace Eriksen, or play alongside him.

The Argentine is likely to cost in excess of £60million if Tottenham can agree the terms of a deal with the La Liga outfit.
