Darren Bent believes the form of Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford forced Carlo Ancelotti into signing Robin Olsen on loan from Roma on deadline day.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the 13-capped England striker believes the Swedish international has been brought in to “push” Pickford.

Ancelotti claimed last month that he had total faith in the England number one and was not interested in signing another goalkeeper but a string of recent errors have seemingly changed his mind.

Despite Everton winning their opening four Premier League games, the 26-year-old has kept just one clean sheet in the league this season.

He was at fault for Brighton’s first goal in the Toffees’ 4-2 win last weekend and was dropped by Gareth Southgate for England’s win over Wales on Thursday night.

Asked by Football Insider what the arrival of Olsen means for Pickford, Bent said: “I think, unfortunately for Jordan Pickford, Ancelotti has had to bring in a new goalkeeper.

“It’s a difficult one for him because we know Jordan Pickford is a good goalkeeper, but these mistakes keep happening and it’s costing them goals.

“I know they managed to overcome it at the weekend, and they managed to get the win but that won’t always be the case.

“Unfortunately he’s started to think ‘what do I do here? do I continue with Jordan Pickford? Or do I get someone to push him.

“Maybe that’s all it is, maybe Jordan just needs somebody to give him a little push and maybe we’ll see the best out of him. At the minute it is a little bit of a concern.”
