Eric Dier will be a “big miss” for Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho, according to Darren Bent.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Spurs and England forward said Mourinho will be worried about his lack of centre-back options.
The 26-year-old withdrew from the England squad during the international break with a hamstring injury.
He was not included in the matchday squad for Spurs’ game with West Ham on Sunday as they conceded three goals in the final 10 minutes to draw 3-3.
Toby Alderweireld replaced him and partnered Davinson Sanchez, who scored an own goal in the draw, at the heart of the defence.
Ben Davies who can play at left-back or in the middle was on the bench while deadline day signing Joe Rodon did not make the squad.
Japhet Tanganga, who has been used mainly at full-back, can also play at the heart of the defence is recovering from a thigh injury.
Asked by Football Insider whether Dier’s absence will be a blow for Tottenham, Bent said: “It will be. Whenever somebody gets an injury while there away on international duty that is a cause for concern for Jose Mourinho.
“With Eric Dier, Mourinho really rates him, he tried to sign him when he was at Manchester United.
“It’s one of those things that is unfortunate and he’ll be a big miss for Spurs.
“Spurs haven’t got that many options at centre-back.”
Dier and Sanchez have started three of Spurs’ five Premier League games in which they are undefeated.
The Lilywhites are yet to keep a clean sheet across all competitions this season but have not lost since their opening day defeat to Everton.
