Darren Bent believes Sergio Romero would have a strong chance of dislodging Jordan Pickford as Everton number one if he were to move from Man United.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the 13-capped England forward suggested Romero may be inspired by countryman Emiliano Martinez and leave his club to be no. 1 somewhere else.
The Times reported that Romero is interested in joining Everton after he slipped down the United pecking order after Dean Henderson returned from a loan spell with Sheffield United.
Current first-choice goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has come under fire in recent weeks following a poor display against Fleetwood Town in the Carabao Cup.
The England goalkeeper was at fault for both of Fleetwood’s goal as the Toffees ran out 5-2 winners.
Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti said after the game that he was not interested in bringing in any competition for Pickford and he had “total confidence” in the 26-year-old.
Asked by Football Insider what Romero would offer Ancelotti’s side, Bent said: “He’s never really let United down, he’s always been a pretty good goalkeeper.
“I can understand why Everton would like him.
“We’ve seen the resurgence of no. 2s. Maybe he’s thinking ‘you know what, I’m good enough to be a no. 1.’
“We’ve seen it with Martinez at Arsenal going to Villa and making an instant impression there.
“I can see Romero going there and pushing Pickford.”
Romero was limited to appearances in Cup competitions and in Europe last season but it now appears Henderson will place for United in those games this season.
He has played 61 times for the club since joining in 2017 but only seven of those have come in the Premier League.
