'What a signing' - Exclusive: Bent reacts to Spurs reported move for 'World Class' ace
Darren Bent claims that Tottenham need to pull off a “world-class” signing like Philippe Coutinho to prove their ambition this summer.
The former Spurs and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists that the 27-year-old is the sort of exciting talent that would make rivals take the north Londoners seriously.
The Mirror report that Spurs have made enquiries to Barcelona about a deal to sign the Brazil international after his loan spell at Bayern Munich.
Football Insider revealed last year that the Lilywhites were interested in pulling off a deal for another international attacking superstar in Paulo Dybala.
Bent questions whether Spurs were serious about their interest last summer but insists they need to prove their intent with a big-name capture.
Asked about the reported Coutinho hunt, Bent told Football Insider: “That’s the one you’ve got to get, you need them type of signings coming through the door because he is definitely somebody who is exciting, can do good things.

“He’s that world-class name that people will be like: ‘Okay, Spurs are taking it seriously.’ You look at last season, we thought they were linked with a couple of superstars – Coutinho, Dybala – and they couldn’t get it over the line.
“Were they really interested in getting these players in or was it just to appease the crowd but obviously, if they can somehow get this guy in the door, then what a signing that is.”
Coutinho has played 32 times for Bayern during his loan spell, with nine goals and eight appearances under his belt.
He was a mainstay for Barcelona last season, with 54 appearances across all competitions.
