Bernardo Silva: Gary Neville proves why Man City captain will be irreplaceable for Pep Guardiola

Bernardo Silva already has Manchester City supporters weeping at the idea of him waving goodbye at the end of the 2025-26 campaign.

The 31-year-old has made 451 appearances for the Citizens since he arrived in 2017, emerging as one of Pep Guardiola’s most trusted stars in recent seasons. Sadly, he has just weeks left at the club.

There were only tears of joy at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, 19 April, though, as City blew the Premier League title race wide open, beating Arsenal 2-1 to move within three points of the league leaders.

While it is almost impossible to find a negative from their display against the Gunners, Silva has reminded Man City of just how difficult it will be to find his replacement ahead of the 2026-27 season.

Bernardo Silva leads Man City to victory vs Arsenal

By no means was it an easy victory for Guardiola’s side, but it was probably their most important of the season so far, moving within three points of first place with a game in hand.

The battle between Erling Haaland and Gabriel Magalhaes was, of course, the biggest talking point, with the Arsenal star deserving of a red card for an attempted headbutt.

Silva’s performance flew far under the radar, and even with impressive stats during his 90 minutes on the pitch, the 31-year-old remained under-appreciated for what he continues to bring to the team.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, Gary Neville was hugely complimentary of City’s captain, saying that he was “always there” and “gripped the football match” in a very different way.

He made the difference at the Etihad, despite not having a huge impact in the final third, but he simply stuck to his task, and it wore Arsenal down.

Who could replace Pep Guardiola’s captain next season?

Rodri and Nico Gonzalez are already fighting for one spot in the team, and although Tijjani Reijnders was signed last summer, the Dutchman has really struggled to break into the lineup this season.

All signs would point towards Man City signing Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, and Stefan Borson told Football Insider that the 23-year-old is the club’s No.1 target to replace the veteran.

Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton are both believed to be on the shortlist, but Forest’s No.8 would certainly be the ideal choice ahead of next season.

It is likely to take quite a bit of money to sign Silva’s replacement, and whoever it is, and however talented they might be, they will have to earn the respect of the fans, just like City’s captain did.
