Newcastle United and Everton are joint favourites to sign Bournemouth striker Jermain Defoe during the January transfer window, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds.
BetVictor have the Magpies and the Toffees both priced at 4/1 and leading the market to sign up Defoe, 35, before the end of the month.
West Ham (6/1) and Stoke (8/1) are also seen to be in the running for the England international, who has struggled to hit the ground running since he returned to Bournemouth in the summer after he left Sunderland on a free transfer.
Defoe is currently sidelined with injury and there’s no doubt that Eddie Howe will want a proven Premier League striker with his experience back in his side as soon as possible in order to fight off the threat of relegation.
The 57-times England international has made 17 appearances in all competitions since joining the Cherries in the summer when he penned a £65,000-a-week deal.
Defoe is the seventh top goalscorer in Premier League history with 161 strikers to his name across spells with Tottenham, West Ham, Portsmouth, Sunderland and Bournemouth.
Freelance reporter Paul Brown, who also works for the Express, claimed on his personal Twitter account in December that Everton are likely to make a bid for Defoe at some stage in the January transfer window.
In other Newcastle United news, this attacker wanted by the Magpies is edging closer to a January switch after a deal was agreed.
